With improved living standards, more and more people are becoming fond of scented candles. So, how do you tell the material of a scented candle? To distinguish whether a scented candle is

made of paraffin or soy wax, you can use the following methods:

1. Observe the appearance and texture

- Paraffin candles:

- The surface is usually smooth and glossy, and may appear translucent or opaque white.

- The texture is relatively hard and may break easily when cut.

- Soy wax candles:

- The color is often milky white or light yellow, and the surface may have a slightly matte or frosted finish.

- The texture is relatively soft, making it easy to scrape out powder and more flexible when cut.

2. Burning behavior

- Paraffin candles:

- The flame is high and may produce a slight black smoke (especially with low-quality paraffin).

- The candle melts quickly and produces a deep wax pool.

- The candle may emit a petroleum-like odor (unscented candles) or artificial fragrance.

- Soy wax candles:

- The flame is relatively stable, with little or no smoke. - Slower melting, shallower wax pool.

- Low-temperature burning means the wax won't burn easily, and the scent is more natural (if using natural essential oils).

3. Wax Condition After Cooling

- Paraffin wax: After resolidification, the surface may be uneven, with crystallization or cracks.

- Soy wax: After solidification, the surface is more even, with some slight bumps (like a creamy texture).

4. Ingredient Labels and Certifications

- Check product labels:

- Soy wax is often labeled "Soy Wax," "100% Soy," or "Vegetable Wax."

- Paraffin wax may be labeled "Paraffin Wax" or simply "Mineral Wax."

- Environmental Certifications: Soy wax products are more likely to be labeled "Natural," "Biodegradable," or certified organic.

5. Price and Brand

- Soy wax is more expensive and generally more expensive than paraffin candles.

- Niche artisanal brands or candles marketed as "natural" are more likely to use soy wax.

6. Simple Testing Methods

- Touch Test: Soy wax is softer and leaves marks easily when pressed with your fingers; paraffin wax is harder.

- Hot Water Test: Place a wax block in hot water:

- Soy wax will become cloudy and easily emulsify (similar to cooking oil).

- Paraffin wax will float and remain as a transparent block.

- Burning Test: Soy wax will leave a clear liquid after burning, while paraffin wax may leave oily residue.

Notes:

- Mixed waxes (such as paraffin and soy wax) are more difficult to distinguish and require a combination of methods.

- Low-quality soy wax may contain paraffin to reduce costs; it is recommended to choose a reputable brand.

Using the above combined methods, you can more accurately identify the main ingredients of a candle.
